School has begun again. And thanks to having the majority of this year's grades already in my pocket, I have alot more time to focus on refining major animation skills. For this quarter of the year, I intend to be able to model 3D characters in Maya and rig them to have the animation-ready.
So far I've speed up and learned quite a bit. I used old 2D concepts of characters that I liked and began making 3D out of them.
In the 1st year, me and a fellow classmate made 2 characters for a schoolproject: Bit & Byte. Sadly the teachers didn't like it back then. But I don't care about that anymore. I personally like them and they were very geometrical. Thus perfect concepts to begin modelling 3D characters. Right now only Bit has been modelled, rigged and animated, while the rig for Byte still needs some tuning. All in all a succes.
The next step was a more humanoid character.
A few years back my best friend and I attempted to make a simple 2D game, where he would do the programming and I'd handle the graphical things. Sadly the game didn't get far, but I did make a 2D maincharacter that doesn't have over-detailed attributes. (he didn't even have a face) named Polaroid. I managed to make a character from a cube in Maya. But what I learned from it was that you're best off making every polygon have 4 corners. No less, no more. I have yet to fix that little detail and the properly connect the rig to his body and I should be able to make a fun little animation of him roundhouse kicking or something. X)
My "magnum opus" of this quarter would be making a detailed humanoid character in Mudbox, export it into Maya and redo all the polygons. The winning character is the character that I've drawn the most so far ofcourse: Princess Aya.
(Tho that is if I exclude Joshua, who I have drawn alot in X-hair Webcomic obviously~)
I've been working on her model for almost 2 weeks now (learning how Mudbox works) and I'm getting closer and closer to making the correct 3D version of her. After that it's a matter of fixing textures, making a rig, and animate her doing stuff.
I hope to manage all of this before the quarter ends and I can safely say that I'm finaly able to make characters in 3D.
